Four people have died following a shooting at the Chicago Mercy Hospital. These include a doctor, a pharmaceutical assistant, a policeman and the gunman.
The gunman died in an exchange of shooting, but it’s unclear if he took his own life. Officials say he was targeting a female who he had a relationship with, but hold back from giving a motive.
Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel said:
“Chicago lost a doctor, pharmaceutical assistant and a police officer, all going about their day, all doing what they love. This tears at the soul of our city. It is the face and the consequence of evil.”
Tamara O’Neal has been named as the doctor who was killed. She was described as “dedicated to caring for her community – a wonderful individual”.
The shootings began at 3pm local time on Monday following an argument between Dr O’Neal and the gunman in the parking lot of the hospital. It is alleged that a friend of the doctors attempted to intervene, at which point the gunman lifted his shirt to show a concealed handgun.
As the friend went for help, gunfire was heard. A witness, James Gray, told reporters that he saw Dr O’Neal fall to the ground, and then the gunman “stood over her and shot her three more times”.
The gunman then made his way inside the hospital, shooting at random. Pharmacist Dayna Less was shot and killed.
Police office Samuel Jimenez was killed in an exchange of gunfire with the gunman, which Chief of Department at the NYPD described as heroic on Twitter.
“Officer Samuel Jimenez died a hero today. He was killed doing what cops do – running into the danger to save others. Sending our condolenceds and prayers to Officer Jimenez’s family and everyone at Chicago Police.”
Another officer was shot at, but was unharmed after the bullet lodged itself into the side of his gun, which was holstered.
