Snapchat are introducing a Visual Search function where you can point your Snapchat camera at a physical product or barcode, and an Amazon card will appear on-screen providing a link for that product on the site.
Obviously Amazon don’t stock everything, so they have implemented a process where it will show you similar products if they don’t sell what you are looking at. It is assumed that this is done by studying recent purchase trends.
It is currently in the testing phase and will be slowing rolled out to everyone, however no time frame has been given as yet. A statement released on their corporate site announced the news as well as saying, “Snapchat has always been the fastest way to communicate, and now it’s the fastest way to shop”.
Since the news was published, share prices grew by 3%, but have now come down to normal levels.
The affiliate deal will bring increased revenue for Snapchat, and is one step to reach their goal of differentiating themselves from other forms of social media.
It follows Instagram launching ‘shopping tags’ in its Stories feature, and Pinterests ‘Shop the Look’ pins.
