Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has beaten Gennady Golovkin on points to win the WBC and WBA middleweight titles. The victory came after a thrilling end to the bout in the Las Vegas rematch.
Both fighters saw a frenzied final round, with Alvarez coming out on top to take the win and avoid a draw suffered the last time they met, 364 days ago. It is the first career loss for Golovkin, otherwise known as GGG.
Alvarez won by a 114-114 115-113 115-113 majority decision.
Golovkin left the ring immediately after the decision without conducting any interviews. Canelo was left to celebrate with his team. Alvarez was fighting for the first time since a six-month drugs ban.
“My corner told me that I needed to win the final round and that what’s I did,” said Alvarez. “I’m very emotional.”
